TALKS about architecture: Lecture w/ Hugh Strange
On Thursday 8th of July TALKS about architecture will broadcast the second lecture of its new online lecture series, themed ‘Material environment’. We’re proud and happy to announce that the London based architect Hugh Strange will take the stage. Strange will talk about his projects, in which the usage of timber is an important factor.
Due to the current restrictions on both international travel and organizing public events the lecture is prerecorded and will be premiered in an online webinar. After the screening of the lecture the speakers will engage in a Q&A with the audience.
Material environment
As from 2021 TALKS about architect focuses specifically on the theme ‘Material environment’. This theme is twofold: Where a clear revaluation of material environments lead to legible, traditional treatments of materials used to compose a building, there is the urgency to deal with the major threats of climate change. The usage of material plays a crucial role in this, because concrete and steel are in the top 4 of the most polluting materials and building sites generate a lot of waste. Architects are therefore challenged to design tangible spaces and at the same time, by choosing a particular material, to make architecture part of the solution to the climate problems at hand. Must we simply avoid the use of concrete and steel by replacing them with wood, or should a new or less regular material be sought? Is it a matter of only building with building material that is already there, or should the methods of producing building materials change?
By inviting practices to talk about their specific approach to the use of material in architecture, we seek to expand our understanding of what the future is in making architecture more sustainable, while broadening our frame of reference for making meaningful, sensible and tangible spaces.

About TALKS about architecture
TALKS about architecture invites a new generation of architect to discuss their work. What they have in common is that they view architecture as an artistic discipline. The social relevance of the work stems from the poetic and spatial qualities of the work itself. TALKS is an initiative of Rotterdam-based architecture office De Kort Van Schaik and is organized in collaboration with AIR.
